ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Most people will have heard of the term ADHD and usually the stereotypical thought is that it is what the diruptive, hard to teach children suffer from, and that it mainly affects boys. This couldn't be more wrong! ADHD has many symptoms and affects both boys and girls, although girls are usually underdiagnosed at school.

Myths vs Reality

  • ADHD only impacts children.
  • ADHD does effect adults as well. In fact many women don't get diagnosed until they are going through the assessment process with their own children.
  • ADHD isnt a thing, we all get distracted.
  • People with ADHD get distracted more often and with more consequences. People with ADHD struggle to focus for long periods of time. But can be hyper focused for hours on something they find interesting.
  • ADHD They're just being lazy.
  • Its not that they don't want to do something, they can't! People with ADHD struggle with executive functioning, meaning they struggle to start tasks and need tasks broken down into small manageable chunks.
  • If they tried harder, it wouldn't be a problem
  • People with ADHD are often trying very hard - just with less results to show for their efforts. People with ADHD can work twice as hard to keep up with peers. They are already trying harder, even if you can not see it on the surface.
